Classic American Literature
Nothing quite captures the American experience and spirit like the stories from some of the country's most renowned writers. American authors come from diverse backgrounds, and each has a unique voice and perspective to share. Dive into an array of classics that pique your interest from our wide selection of classic novels.
Must-Read Classic Literature
Relive history's most culturally significant moments with some of the most recognized characters in classic American novels. Journey down the Mississippi River through Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, and see the world through the eyes of Scout in To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck shed light on Great Depression-era struggles, and F. Scott Fitzgerald explores the hollow glamor of the 1920s in The Great Gatsby. If seafaring adventure is what you're after, climb aboard with Herman Melville and the inspirational tale of Moby Dick.
American Women Writers
Women have carved out a distinct voice in American fiction, providing countless stories we recognize as classics today. Several celebrated authors detailed the unique experiences of black women throughout history with classic novels, such as Beloved by Toni Morrison and The Color Purple by Alice Walker. Feel inspired with Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, and spark discussions about liberation in The Awakening by Kate Chopin.
Coming-of-Age Classics
Growing up is among the most common themes in classic American literature, and several novels perfectly depict the shared experiences of young people across the literary landscape. The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger and The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton are two famous examples centered on male youth, and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith offers a coming-of-age story from a female perspective.
Classic Stories From Around the World
The classic literature collection at ThriftBooks doesn't stop at American stories. We also offer various classic and modern novels from all over the world. Our inventory includes A Christmas Carol, Great Expectations, and other titles from Charles Dickens, as well as the works of Jane Austen and the Brontë sisters. If you prefer darker English classics, consider Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, and George Orwell's 1984.
If you enjoy Russian literature, immerse yourself in the works of Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoevsky. Book lovers interested in Latin American literature can read One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez, The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, and much more.
